Welcome to Neurofeedback Tutor: Assessment and Training!
BioSource Software designed Neurofeedback Tutor: Assessment and Training to aid your BCIA Neurofeedback exam preparation. BCIA has accredited Neurofeedback Tutor (An Introduction and Assessment and Training) for 36 hours of didactic and continuing education credit.
This multimedia tutorial completely covers the Assessment (Intake Assessment, EEG Assessment, Ongoing Assessment, Assessment Demonstration), Treatment Protocols (Early Protocols, Steps in Protocol Development, Demonstration, Trends in Neurofeedback), and Treatment Implementation (Client Preparation, Therapeutic Relationship, Procedures and Mechanics, Alpha-Theta Training, Remote Training, Demonstration) rubrics of the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance's (BCIA) Blueprint of Knowledge for Neurofeedback Certification.
We encourage you to use our Mentor GPT as your personal coach. We have extensively trained Mentor GPT on this tutorial, the peer-reviewed scientific literature, and our deeply researched posts.

The depth and breadth of coverage exceed the BCIA Blueprint to provide an educational resource for your practice. BioSource Software will periodically update content to reflect scientific advances.
John Anderson, John Davis, and Fred Shaffer authored Neurofeedback Tutor: An Introduction and its companion Neurofeedback Tutor: Assessment and Training.

John Foley, a Truman State University graduate and software and server engineer, redesigned Neurofeedback Tutor's code and registration application. He moved our distribution of this product to the cloud to ensure that you have the latest version. John set-up and management of our servers is the reason we have industry-leading reliability. John is brilliant, generous, and focused on providing the best possible user experience.

Appreciation
The authors are indebted to Jay Gunkelman, who is our dear friend, mentor, and force of nature. We cannot imagine the neurofeedback field without his seminal contributions.

Jay Gunkelman is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in EEG and quantitative EEG, with a career in applied psychophysiology that began in 1972 when he helped establish one of the first biofeedback laboratories based in a state hospital. Over the following decades he specialized in clinical EEG and qEEG, ultimately processing more than 500,000 EEG recordings and becoming one of the most experienced EEG and qEEG specialists in the world. As a QEEG Diplomate and later QEEG Diplomate Emeritus, he has served as president of the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research (ISNR), as a board member and treasurer of the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB), and as past president of the Biofeedback Society of California, helping to shape professional standards and certification pathways in neurofeedback and EEG-based assessment.
Gunkelman has authored or co-authored numerous technical guides, articles, and presentations that link specific EEG and qEEG patterns to clinical symptoms and medication effects, including widely used materials on drug effects on EEG, infra-low frequency activity, epileptiform transients, and qEEG-guided treatment planning. He has been recognized internationally with honors such as the ISNR M.B. Sterman Career Achievement (Lifetime Achievement) Award, and ISNR and IQCB established the Jay Gunkelman Scholarly Research Awards for outstanding work using qEEG, underscoring his status as a foundational figure in the field. Colleagues and institutions worldwide describe him as an icon and mentor whose teaching, workshops, and consultations have trained thousands of clinicians in careful visual EEG analysis and qEEG interpretation, leaving a legacy that continues to guide contemporary neurofeedback practice.
We are also grateful to Bio-Medical Instruments, BrainMaster, the Houston Neuroscience Brain Clinic, Mind Media, and Thought Technology Ltd. who generously provided graphics and videos.

Five references deserve a place on your reference shelf. We found them invaluable in writing Neurofeedback Tutor.

Dedication
We dedicate
Neurofeedback Tutor to Michael and Lynda Thompson for their friendship, scholarship, and world-class teaching and mentoring.
Michael and Lynda Thompson have been central figures in bringing neurofeedback into mainstream applied neuroscience and clinical practice. Lynda, a clinical psychologist, became Executive Director of the ADD Centre and Biofeedback Institute of Toronto in the early 1990s. She built what became the largest Canadian centre using EEG biofeedback for attention-deficit disorders and performance enhancement, developing intensive, individualized training programs that integrate neurofeedback, other psychophysiological measures, and metacognitive strategies. Michael, a psychiatrist and medical educator, brought decades of experience as an academic at the University of Western Ontario and as a pediatric neurology consultant to major teaching hospitals before devoting himself full-time to the administration, clinical work, and professional training activities of the ADD Centre and Biofeedback Institute. Together they created a clinical and teaching environment that emphasized careful assessment, evidence-based protocols, and the use of applied neuroscience to improve self-regulation of attention, emotion, and performance across the lifespan.
Their written work has shaped how an entire generation learns neurofeedback. Michael and Lynda co-authored The Neurofeedback Book: An Introduction to Basic Concepts in Applied Psychophysiology and its extensively revised second edition, which integrates and expands material that had previously appeared in their separate Functional Neuroanatomy volume. This text is still described by professional bodies as a uniquely comprehensive single-author overview of the information needed for effective neurofeedback practice. They have contributed chapters and methods descriptions to major neurofeedback and qEEG references, helping clinicians map EEG findings to functional neuroanatomy and tailor interventions to specific networks, lobes, and Brodmann areas. Beyond the written page, they have delivered more than 150 invited lectures, workshops, and trainings in roughly 25 countries on five continents, playing a decisive role in disseminating technical skills and ethical standards for neurofeedback around the world.
Clinically, Michael and Lynda Thompson helped demonstrate that carefully structured neurofeedback and biofeedback protocols could meaningfully improve symptoms in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and related conditions across the lifespan, and they documented their methods and outcomes in peer-reviewed publications and case-based reports. Lynda's work in ADHD, learning problems, and co-morbidities, and her broader writing on applied neuroscience and self-regulation, exemplify a multimodal, skills-based approach that integrates physiological training with cognitive and behavioral strategies. Michael, who passed away in March 2021, is remembered not only for his clinical and academic contributions but also for his devotion to teaching, reflected in international recognition such as a Lifetime Achievement Recognition and a Distinguished Scientist Award, as well as in the thousands of clinicians and clients influenced by his work. Dedicating Neurofeedback Tutor to Michael and Lynda Thompson honors a joint legacy that combines rigorous science, careful clinical craft, and an enduring commitment to helping people gain more skillful control over their own brains and lives.
