Appreciation
The authors are indebted to Jay Gunkelman, our dear friend, mentor, and force of nature. We cannot imagine the neurofeedback field without his seminal contributions. Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in EEG and quantitative EEG, Jay began his career in applied psychophysiology in 1972 and has since processed more than 500,000 EEG recordings, making him one of the most experienced EEG and qEEG specialists in the world. As a QEEG Diplomate Emeritus, he has served as president of the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research (ISNR), as a board member and treasurer of the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB), and as past president of the Biofeedback Society of California, helping to shape the professional standards of the field.
Jay has authored numerous technical guides and articles linking EEG and qEEG patterns to clinical symptoms and medication effects. His honors include the ISNR M.B. Sterman Career Achievement (Lifetime Achievement) Award, and both ISNR and IQCB established the Jay Gunkelman Scholarly Research Awards in his name. Colleagues and institutions worldwide describe him as an icon and mentor whose teaching, workshops, and consultations have trained thousands of clinicians in careful EEG and qEEG interpretation.
Dedication
We dedicate Neurofeedback Tutor to Michael and Lynda Thompson for their friendship, scholarship, and world-class teaching and mentoring. Michael and Lynda have been central figures in bringing neurofeedback into mainstream applied neuroscience and clinical practice. Lynda, a clinical psychologist, became Executive Director of the ADD Centre and Biofeedback Institute of Toronto in the early 1990s, building the largest Canadian centre using EEG biofeedback for attention-deficit disorders and performance enhancement. Michael, a psychiatrist and medical educator, brought decades of academic and clinical experience before devoting himself full-time to the Centre's clinical work and professional training.
Their written work has shaped how an entire generation learns neurofeedback. Together they co-authored The Neurofeedback Book: An Introduction to Basic Concepts in Applied Psychophysiology, still regarded as a uniquely comprehensive overview of the field, and delivered more than 150 invited lectures and workshops in roughly 25 countries on five continents. Michael, who passed away in March 2021, is remembered for his clinical and academic contributions and his devotion to teaching, honored with a Lifetime Achievement Recognition and a Distinguished Scientist Award. Dedicating Neurofeedback Tutor to Michael and Lynda honors a joint legacy of rigorous science, careful clinical craft, and an enduring commitment to helping people gain more skillful control over their own brains and lives.
